Pinterest Lies

Warning: Rant starting in 3…2…1…

I love Pinterest. Even though it’s a huge time suck, and I don’t really have much time to spare, I love mindlessly clicking through photos and finding new things to “ooh and ahh” at. Sometimes I look at the Fitness pages, sometimes the food pages, heck, sometimes I just click around randomly until I find pretty things.

Ooh! Sparkles!!

One thing that bothers me about Pinterest though, is in between all of the awesomeness, there is  a whole bunch of crap that’s on there (especially in the Health and Fitness category). It’s basically a dumping ground for all of the horrible diets, fads, fitspo, and workouts that the fitness/nutrition industries have to offer. All in one, efficient, fitspirational package.

I wish I could put out a PSA about what not to believe on Pinterest, because I feel like some people use it as their bible. “Ooh, eat these 30 foods and I’ll lose 10 pounds in a week? It MUST be true, the internet says so!”

What better to do with a bunch of lies than to call them out and expose them in one place? Here are some of the true gems that I’ve found lately. Be warned though, some of these may cause involuntary shuddering, gagging, or violent outbursts.

  1. OMG YES!!!!! Finally someone posts about this! I’m always so annoyed by some of those “fitspo” things too– I mean heck, some of them aren’t even healthy at all! Crazy I tell ya.
I think I’d rather just gawk over cute outfits and all the delicious food porn recipes on Pinterest heehee 😉

  2. Best post ever!!! I get so frustrated sometimes seeing things like this all over the internet and so happy I am not alone in my frustration! It’s so great to have someone else who actually “gets” what fitness, rest days, and healthy living are all about!

  3. OMG! This is why I don’t use Pinterest. What a joke. I feel sorry for everyone out there wasting time with their arm circles and inner thigh toning exercises.

  4. THANK YOU for this post! I get so frustrated on Pinterest sometimes. There are some good workouts out there, but they are few and far between and are lost in the mess that is the health and wellness section. I’m sorry, but standing on a bosu ball while using a machine? Not safe or smart.

  5. lol this post made me laugh out loud… seriously! people are so ridiculous!! do people actually believe some of the crap that’s on there?? i mean COME ON!!! at least we, who know better, get a kick out of it 🙂

  6. Hahaha these are so ridiculous! This is exactly why I don’t look at the Fitness board on Pinterest. I’ll stick to the Food & Drink board, haha. 😉

  7. YES!!!
OMG I can’t even tell you how much it irks me about “no pan blah blah blah”
seriously – there are things called stress fractures that you SHOULD NOT push through…it just seems very disordered in my opinion

  8. I just found your blog by accident, and I’m so glad I did! I fully agree with you on all this 🙂 It’s great to see other women who aren’t obsessed with “toning” and terrified of a little muscle. There is way too much misinformation out there geared towards women that is just making us weaker! Anyway, thanks for making the Internet a better place! I’m looking forward to your future posts.

  9. I’m a bit late to the party, but I found this post because I passive-aggressively googled “pinterest lies” out of frustration with the sheer amount of fitness-related bullshit that gets posted on that site. The pin that triggered it, I think, was “Did you know you can cleanse your body and lose weight by consuming nothing but cayenne-pepper-infused lemon juice all day for three days? OMG MUST TRY!” But my faith in humanity is now restored. Thank you!
