Excuse Me, Did Somebody Spike My Chicken?

Catchy title, no?

Before I get into my actual post, I just want to take a minute and say that I am so excited about being freshly pressed on Monday! I’m so happy to be able to have the chance to reach more people, and to all of my lovely new followers: thank you, and welcome!! If you’re new here, take a minute to peruse around some of my older posts if you wish, or simply just keep on reading. What you’ll find here is a mix of science-y, educational, mildly funny information with a whole bunch of random thoughts thrown in for fun. It’s really just a  clear snapshot of what’s going on in my brain at any given moment. Also, a gratuitous amount of cute animal pictures, because who doesn’t love those?

Now let’s get on with it!

So I’m pretty sure that by now, most of us have seen the picture of the “pink slime” or Mechanically Separated Chicken that many processed chicken products are made out of. (I can’t even post the picture here, because it grosses me out so much)

But what about the unprocessed chicken meat that you buy from the grocery store? I’m talking real, straight-up chicken here, not some packaged, pre-formed “chicken product”. That’s safe to eat right? I mean, it’s obviously just chicken. Right?

That’s where things get tricky. Take a few minutes to read this article about what really may be in your chicken, and then let’s have a chitty-chat.

I don’t know about you, but when I’m eating chicken, I’m not trying to eat antidepressants, antibiotics, arsenic, caffeine, pain killers, allergy meds, or anything else that they’re pumping those chickens full of.  I know that a lot of this doesn’t come as a total shock to a lot of us; there has been a lot of negative press about poultry farming and the resultant meat that we are fed, but I do think that it continues to deserve attention.

The biggest thing that concerns me here is the antibiotics. If there is a chance, even a small chance, that ingesting these antibiotics (even in trace amounts) could lead to antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria that could ultimately be dangerous to humans, I’m going to try to avoid this as much as possible.

Could allergy meds found in chicken play any part in the drastic rise in allergies in children over the past decade or so? (This is just speculation on my part, but I don’t think it’s totally out of the question).

And Prozac? Don’t even get me started there. The fact that farmed chickens are fed Prozac is alarming, never mind the fact that traces of that drug can than end up on our plates.

So how can we avoid this? Buy organic. Grass fed, antibiotic free, organic free-range chicken. Many people dispute the importance of buying organic, and I do too for certain foods. But when it comes to beef and poultry, I honestly feel that avoiding all of those additives and drugs could be immensely important to our health and the health of future generations. True, not everyone can afford organic chicken, and if that’s the case than there’s no getting around that. But if you can afford a few more dollars for organic, grass fed poultry, you will be doing your health a favor. It’s not just a gimmick, or a trend, it’s the truth.

  1. Wow this was so informative! Learning about the threats of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria in my microbiology class has opened my eyes to all the unseen issues in the food industry for sure. But chickens and prozac…WTF?!?! It makes me wish I lived during my grandma’s childhood when everything was free range, hormone free and organic haha I guess those were the days!

    • I totally agree, back in the day this wasn’t even a concern! And I understand the argument that there are just too many people to feed now to worry about everything being organic, but I feel like there has to be a better answer than pumping these animals full of drugs!

  2. I knew about the antibiotics, but hey Prozac and caffeine in so called natural chicken!! That is terrifying!!
    We eat mostly plant based and when we do eat meat we will try to find meat that comes from grass fed and organically raised animals. It is expensive, but we have changed the balance on our plates so most is plant-based and when we have meat then it is as a side dish. That makes it healthier and cheaper too. I will make an extra point on choosing organic and grass fed meat every time!!
    It really is important to bring awareness about this!! Did you see the documentaries “Food Matters” and “Hungry for Change” ?

    • Thanks for your comment! I haven’t seen those documentaries but I would love to check them out; I find those types of documentaries fascinating and disturbing all at the same time. It’s great that you eat a lot of plant based foods, although I don’t think that everyone needs to go that route, if that works better for your family than stick with it!

  3. Ok, so I read the title and I thought “Oh, Steph and her catchy titles” and then you said “catchy title?” hahahahahaha. I LOVE YOU.

    So, the article and the entire issue is completely disturbing; however, I haven’t bought organic chicken after reading it. I know. That’s gross and I should change my ways because I do have access to organic chicken.

    • Ha, Thanks babe, Love ya! I know a lot of people who know all of this info but still don’t buy organic, so I think that’s pretty common… I honestly just made the switch a couple of years ago but it’s almost impossible to totally avoid it since you never know where food from restaurants is coming from!

  4. Firstly, I’m new to the world of blogs and started blogging a few months ago. I enjoyed your article and the blogging community… sharing ideas and thoughts on topics we are passionate about! Now..my family strives to buy and eat organic foods mostly but for poultry it has to be organic! We are very worried about antibiotics and growth hormone in animals especially when we have a young child at home. Eating traces of any antibiotic and hormone over years will inevitably lead to diseases and disorders. It’s the simple choice that we make each day on what we put into our mouth that will determine our long-term health.

  5. Before a recent diet changes, I had started buying organic chicken, but not consistently. This article makes me want to reconsider some things, but a part of me wonders if organic chicken is even trustworthy these days. I mean besides the company’s promises and random sampling are we sure that everything labeled organic is really organic? Sometimes I wonder.
